When the Engines Fail

In rare instances in our intergalactic travels, we loose all power to the engines. In extreme cases, this causes a cascade of errors that shuts down all systems and leaves us adrift in the cosmos. As Engineering scrambles to restore power, we do what we can to make our passengers calm and comfortable.

In all seriousness, the server outage we experienced this past Sunday was frustrating and unacceptable. Coupled with the downtime that some of you experienced last week, we’re left with difficult decisions in front of us.

We know that for many of you, your site is your business. For others, it is your company’s primary marketing vehicle. Regardless of its specific function, your web site is mission critical. We understand.

We’ve been with DreamHost for over 4 years, and they have been consistently reliable for that time. In the past two weeks however, their service has become subpar.

What are we planning to do about it?

We’ve already started searching for another provider. Whether we move to another provider depends on two factors:
1) if we can find a new host that has better service and uptime than DreamHost
2) what DreamHost plans to do to ensure these issues will not happen again.

I’ll be perfectly honest— changing hosting providers would be a huge undertaking. Moving all client sites, databases, etc would take an enormous amount of time.

But, if moving is something we need to do in order to keep your site live, and safe, we will do it. You’ve entrusted us with your web site and we will not let you down. As soon as we make a decision on our hosting arrangements, we will let you know.
